The government has begun the distribution of 40,000 bags of fertiliser to peasant farmers across the country as part of efforts to improve agricultural productivity and strengthen food security.
The exercise, which started on June 16, forms part of the Feed Ghana Programme, a flagship initiative aimed at supporting smallholder farmers with essential inputs to increase crop yields and reduce production costs.
According to the National Coordinator of the programme, Bright Demordzi, access to fertiliser remains a key factor in improving farm productivity, especially for small-scale farmers who contribute significantly to the country’s food supply. He explained that the intervention is intended to help farmers achieve better yields during the current farming season while also supporting national efforts to reduce food imports.
The distribution is being carried out in collaboration with the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana to ensure that the fertiliser reaches farmers across all agricultural zones in the country. Mr. Demordzi noted that the association’s nationwide presence makes it a suitable partner for effective distribution.
He added that a database of beneficiaries has been developed to ensure transparency and efficient delivery of the fertiliser to farmers who need it most.
The intervention is expected to support increased food production, stabilize food supplies, and contribute to moderating food inflation in the country.
