Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding across several parts of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), disrupting movement and raising safety concerns among students and staff.
The flooding, which followed a downpour on Thursday morning, occurred after the Wiwi River overflowed its banks, inundating major sections of the campus. Areas heavily affected include Mecca Road, Casely Hayford, Agric Junction, and several bridges connecting different parts of the university.
The floodwaters have made movement difficult, with students and staff forced to seek alternative routes to access lecture halls, hostels, and administrative areas. Reports indicate that some students attempted to wade through the floodwaters to attend lectures, despite the obvious safety risks involved.
In response to the situation, some students were reportedly directed back to their hostels as authorities monitored conditions and assessed the extent of the flooding. The incident temporarily disrupted normal academic activities and sparked concerns over accessibility and emergency preparedness on campus.
The impact of the flooding extended beyond roads and walkways. Paa Joe Stadium, one of the university's major sporting facilities, was also submerged, with parts of the stadium inundated by floodwaters. The development has raised concerns about possible damage to infrastructure and the effect on sporting and recreational activities.
Students and members of the university community have been advised to prioritise their safety, avoid walking or driving through flooded areas, and remain alert as weather conditions continue to be monitored.
The incident once again highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to extreme weather events and underscores the need for long-term measures to improve drainage systems and flood management across the KNUST campus.
