The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has emerged as the overall winner of the 9th Mini Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), after a dominant performance across multiple sporting disciplines.
The competition, which ran from May 5 to May 15, 2026, brought together student-athletes from various tertiary institutions across Ghana under the theme “Integrating University Sports with Academic Professionalism.”
At the end of the games, UCC topped the medal table with 21 gold, 18 silver and 11 bronze medals, recording a total of 50 medals to secure first place overall.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) finished second with 39 medals, while the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) placed third with 47 medals overall.
UEW impressed in football, winning gold in the soccer category and also performing strongly in athletics, particularly in the men’s division.
UCC, however, demonstrated consistency across several events, excelling in table tennis, tennis, badminton, athletics (women), volleyball (women) and men’s basketball.
President of GUSA, Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, praised UPSA for successfully hosting the event and commended athletes for their discipline, unity and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
He noted that the Mini GUSA Games serve as a platform not only for competition but also for selecting athletes for international events such as the FISU Games.
He also highlighted challenges facing university sports in Ghana, including inadequate funding and limited sporting infrastructure, calling on stakeholders and government to invest more in athlete development and facilities.
The event ended with medal presentations and trophy awards, with UCC receiving the overall championship trophy in recognition of their outstanding performance.
