GTEC Withdraws Post-Retirement Policy After Education Minister’s Directive
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has withdrawn its policy directive on post-retirement contracts for senior university lecturers following instructions from the Minister for Education.

The directive affects letters issued on September 30 and October 1, 2025, which outlined arrangements for academic staff engagement after retirement in public universities.

In a statement signed by Deputy Director-General Prof. Augustine Ocloo, GTEC confirmed the withdrawal, noting that the decision was taken in line with the Education Minister’s order.

The Commission explained that the move is intended to allow further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure broad consensus and institutional sustainability before any final decision is made.

The Ministry of Education said the action followed discussions between the Minister and leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), which raised concerns about the policy communication.

It emphasized that the withdrawal is temporary and part of a wider consultative process aimed at developing a more acceptable framework for the tertiary education sector.

The Ministry further reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and stakeholder engagement in all policy decisions affecting higher education in Ghana.
