The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated a committee to advise government on the establishment of new public universities across Ghana as part of efforts to expand access to tertiary education.
The committee is expected to report to the Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and will provide recommendations on how to strategically increase the number of public universities while strengthening existing institutions and completing ongoing projects.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, April 15, the Minister explained that the initiative forms part of government’s broader plan to address the growing demand for higher education in the country.
“Higher education remains a critical public good and a critical public need because there are many young people in Ghana who are still having difficulty accessing quality higher education across the country,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
He further noted that the committee was set up at the request of the Vice President, with the President’s approval, to ensure a coordinated approach to expanding tertiary education infrastructure nationwide.
At the inauguration, the Chairperson of the committee and former Minister of Education, Dr. Christina Amoako-Nuama, described the assignment as both timely and ambitious, stressing its importance in improving access to higher education.
“The mandate entrusted to this committee, which is to expand access to higher education through the establishment of new public universities, the completion of ongoing projects, and the strategic expansion of existing tertiary institutions, is both ambitious and timely,” she said.
The committee is expected to engage key stakeholders in the education sector and submit recommendations that will shape the future direction of public university education in Ghana.
