Government Allocates GH¢400 Million for Completion of KNUST Teaching Hospital
The government has committed GH¢400 million towards the completion of the long-awaited teaching hospital at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), with plans to commission the facility before the end of the year.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, gave the assurance while speaking at the launch of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Mfantsipim School.

He explained that President John Mahama will, within the year, join the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to commission the project, in response to the traditional leader’s appeal for its completion.

The Education Minister disclosed that the GH¢400 million allocation has been set aside to ensure the long-delayed project is completed, stressing government’s renewed commitment to critical health infrastructure.

The KNUST Teaching Hospital, once completed, is expected to serve as a major teaching and referral facility, enhancing medical training and improving healthcare delivery in the Ashanti Region and across the country.

The assurance follows a recent appeal by the Asantehene, who, in his role as Chancellor of KNUST, urged government to expedite the commissioning of the first phase of the hospital. He had earlier expressed concern over the prolonged delay of the project during the university’s 59th Special Congregation in Kumasi.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also welcomed Parliament’s approval of the necessary budgetary allocation, describing the hospital as a vital national investment that bridges academic research and practical healthcare delivery needs.

The project is expected to significantly strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system once completed.
