A new Physiotherapy Unit and a modern Computed Tomography (CT) scan facility have been commissioned at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital in Kumasi, strengthening healthcare delivery for students, staff, and the surrounding community.
The upgrade follows a partnership between KNUST and Spectra Health, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2025, which led to the installation of a new 32-slice CT scanner equipped with an advanced radiology information system to improve diagnosis and reporting.
According to the Director of University Health Services, Dr. Nana Kwame Ofori Ayisi-Boateng, the new development marks a major milestone after the hospital’s previous CT scanner became non-functional several years ago, creating gaps in diagnostic services. He noted that early engagements by past leadership and the Vice-Chancellor helped attract the needed investment support.
He further revealed that the newly installed CT facility served more than 20 patients within just three days of operation, highlighting its immediate impact on healthcare delivery. He also pointed to the rapid growth of physiotherapy services since 2022, with patient numbers increasing significantly over time.
The Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Christian Agyare, explained that the initiative initially began as an academic support project but has now evolved into a key clinical and training resource for students. He stressed the need for proper maintenance to ensure long-term sustainability.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, described the development as part of KNUST’s broader vision of strengthening healthcare through collaboration and innovation. She emphasized the importance of teamwork, communication, and modern diagnostic tools in improving patient care, while reaffirming management’s commitment to further expansion of health infrastructure at the university.
Spectra Health CEO, Prof. G. A. Asafu-Adjaye Frimpong, also noted that the upgraded system would enhance emergency care by enabling faster diagnosis of critical conditions such as strokes and pulmonary embolism.
The facility is expected to serve both academic and clinical purposes while improving access to quality healthcare within the university and beyond.
