Unemployed graduate teachers in Ghana have raised concerns following the government’s announcement of 7,000 available recruitment slots for teachers.

According to the Ministry of Education, financial clearance has been secured from the Ministry of Finance to enable the recruitment of at least 7,000 teachers nationwide. The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, indicated that the exercise is intended to help address staffing gaps in schools while also creating employment opportunities for trained graduates.

He further explained that the process will be conducted in a fair and competitive manner, with applicants drawn from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 graduating cohorts. Priority is expected to be given to those willing to accept postings in rural and underserved areas where teacher shortages are most severe.

Despite this assurance, many unemployed trained teachers have expressed disappointment, arguing that the number of available slots is far too limited compared to the large pool of qualified graduates awaiting employment. They believe the allocation does not adequately reflect the scale of unemployment within the education sector.

The aggrieved teachers are therefore urging government to reconsider and expand the recruitment quota to accommodate more qualified applicants across the country.
