In a historic first, Donald Trump is set to have his signature appear on United States banknotes while serving as president, following an announcement by the United States Department of the Treasury.
The Treasury revealed that Trump’s signature will be printed alongside that of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as part of commemorative efforts marking America’s 250th anniversary. Officials described the move as symbolic, highlighting the nation’s history and leadership during a milestone moment.
Traditionally, US currency carries only the signatures of treasury officials, making this a significant break from a convention that dates back to the 19th century. The first $100 notes bearing both signatures are expected to be printed in June, with other denominations to follow later.
Current banknotes in circulation will remain valid and continue to feature the signatures of former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Treasurer Lynn Malerba, who served under Joe Biden.
Commenting on the decision, Bessent stated that including Trump’s signature on US dollar bills represents a powerful way to recognize both the president and the country’s achievements. US Treasurer Brandon Beach also emphasized that the nation’s currency will continue to symbolize strength, prosperity, and resilience.
The announcement comes as the United States commemorates 250 years since the American Declaration of Independence, when the original 13 colonies declared independence from Britain.
However, the decision has sparked political reactions. Gavin Newsom criticized the move, linking it to broader concerns about the president’s economic record and rising living costs in the country.
The development forms part of a wider push by the administration to associate Trump’s name with national symbols. Earlier this month, a federal arts commission approved a commemorative 24-karat gold coin bearing his image, further tying his legacy to the anniversary celebrations.
While supporters see the move as a fitting tribute during a historic milestone, critics argue it blurs long-standing institutional traditions, setting the stage for continued debate.
