The Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, has received the maiden Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) Meritorious Award in recognition of her outstanding leadership and contributions to higher education in Ghana.

The award was presented during the opening of the 3rd GTEC Annual Summer School, hosted by KNUST, in recognition of her commitment to strengthening quality assurance, promoting academic excellence, and advancing higher education in the country.

Receiving the award, Prof. Dickson expressed gratitude to GTEC and dedicated the honour to the entire KNUST community, describing it as a reflection of the collective efforts of the University’s management, faculty, staff, and students in advancing excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and institutional development.

She called for stronger collaboration and continuous dialogue between GTEC and higher education institutions, stressing that many of the sector’s challenges could be resolved through timely communication and mutual understanding.

Prof. Dickson encouraged the Commission to deepen its engagement with universities through regular consultations and informal discussions before resorting to formal correspondence, noting that such an approach would strengthen relationships and improve the delivery of higher education.

She reaffirmed KNUST’s commitment to working closely with GTEC to uphold quality standards and improve the tertiary education experience for students across Ghana.

Speaking at the event, GTEC Director-General Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai said the Commission introduced the Meritorious Awards to recognise individuals and institutions that have demonstrated exceptional leadership, resilience, and excellence in Ghana’s tertiary education sector.

He noted that while attention is often given to the challenges facing higher education, it is equally important to celebrate those whose contributions continue to strengthen and transform the sector.
