Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that government is currently recruiting about 7,000 teachers and 3,000 lecturers to help address the staffing deficit in Ghana’s education sector.
Speaking in Parliament on Friday, May 29, 2026, the Minister explained that the recruitment exercise forms part of efforts to improve teacher availability in schools across the country, particularly in underserved areas.
According to him, Ghana requires at least 50,000 teachers nationwide to adequately meet current educational demands, although further recruitment will depend on financial clearance and the government’s ability to absorb additional staff into the public payroll.
Haruna Iddrisu revealed that some schools continue to face severe staffing challenges, citing the Prestea Huni-Valley area where parents are reportedly paying the salaries of 176 teachers due to shortages within the formal system.
He further disclosed that newly recruited teachers are expected to begin work from July 1, 2026, as government continues efforts to strengthen teaching and learning at both the basic and tertiary levels.
