The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), through its Otumfuo Centre for Traditional Leadership (OCTL), has graduated 35 traditional leaders and administrators after a five-day intensive leadership and governance programme designed to strengthen traditional institutions and their contribution to national development.
The graduation ceremony, held at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium, brought together chiefs, queen mothers, traditional council staff and representatives of Regional Houses of Chiefs. Participants received certificates and diplomas after completing training in strategic leadership, negotiation and networking, land administration, record keeping, conflict resolution and community development.
Speaking at the event, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Emmanuel Selase Asamoah, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to supporting traditional institutions through education and capacity-building initiatives.
He explained that strengthening the leadership capacity of traditional authorities remains important in promoting peacebuilding, governance and community transformation while preserving the relevance of the chieftaincy institution.
Former Attorney-General Joe Ghartey highlighted the importance of traditional authorities in Ghana’s governance structure and called for stronger participation of chiefs and queen mothers in local governance systems.
He proposed direct representation of traditional leaders at municipal and district assembly levels and suggested expanded responsibilities in areas such as civil and environmental matters to strengthen community development and reduce pressure on the judicial system.
Special Guest of Honour Nii Ahene Nunoo III encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained from the training to foster unity, accountability and development within their communities.
The Director of OCTL, Dr. Gerald Nyanyofio, stated that the programme, now in its 17th edition, continues to bridge traditional leadership practices with modern governance by equipping traditional authorities with practical administrative and leadership skills.
