Ghana’s push for digital transformation has gained momentum with new support for the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), following the presentation of laptops to aid its nationwide rollout.
The donation, made by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) at the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations on April 10, is aimed at strengthening the delivery and coordination of training activities under the initiative. The devices will play a key role in supporting operations as the programme expands across the country.
Designed as a flagship intervention, the OMCP focuses on equipping young people with essential digital skills to boost employability and position Ghana within the global digital space.
Addressing participants at the event, the sector Minister, Samuel Nartey George, highlighted government’s dedication to ensuring access to technology for all and advancing the country’s digital agenda. He noted that partnerships and institutional collaboration remain critical to the success of the programme.
He also disclosed that after its launch by the President nearly a year ago, a technical team was tasked to evaluate its implementation, leading to a detailed report that now guides the training phase. He emphasised that the initiative is structured to create job opportunities for participants.
Implementation efforts have so far seen the establishment of 130 centres nationwide, each equipped with modern facilities, while 12 universities are collaborating with the Ministry of Education to enhance training quality and reach.
The event was attended by key officials including Deputy Minister Mohammed Adams Sukparu, GIFEC Administrator Tanko Rashid-Computer, Deputy Administrator Nana Akyaa Amoah-Amissah, and Director of Corporate Affairs Francisca Adjei.
With GIFEC’s support aligning with its mandate to promote digital inclusion, especially in rural areas, the full rollout of the OMCP is expected to accelerate Ghana’s digital growth and empower a new generation of tech-driven professionals.
