The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) has organized a meeting with tricycle (keke) operators to improve transport safety and cooperation on campus. The event was held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at the Cedi Auditorium on the main campus in Sokode-Lokoe, Ho.
The meeting recognized keke operators as important members of the university community and discussed issues such as traffic rules, overloading, and conflicts with campus authorities.
Officials from law enforcement, national security, and the university leadership attended the programme to guide operators on safer and more orderly transport services.
DSP Augustine Kofi Awuah, Volta Regional Operations Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), encouraged operators to form associations and register with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA). He warned that accidents affect everyone, not just riders, and stressed that complaints should be handled through proper channels.
Mr. Seth Appiah from the National Signals Bureau reminded operators to avoid overloading and speeding, noting that surveillance cameras record violations. He also cautioned that foreigners driving tricycles without licenses are breaking the law.
A representative from the Volta Regional National Security office advised operators to follow the law, treat passengers well, and avoid attacking law enforcement.
Arc. Ruth Xorladem Ayittey, Director of Works and Physical Development at UHAS, announced a new system to screen keke operators and issue stickers for a small fee. She also introduced designated parking areas, set fare lists, and a dress code for operators. She reminded them that students are their main customers and should be treated with respect.
Mr. Anthony Asempah, Director of Public Affairs at UHAS, highlighted that keke operators play a key role in supporting the university’s mission. He asked them to maintain good behavior to protect the school’s reputation and ensure safety.
The session ended with questions about foreign operators and unregistered vehicles, and UHAS security was tasked with making sure only authorized tricycles enter the campus.
