The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has called on newly admitted students to comply with its mandatory medical screening and openly declare any health conditions or disabilities. The move, the university says, is part of a broader commitment to ensuring an inclusive and supportive academic environment.
Speaking during the 2025/2026 virtual orientation programme, Mrs. Theodora Oduro, Senior Assistant Registrar and Head of the Office of Student Support and Financial Services (SSFS) under the Directorate of Student Affairs (DoSA), stressed the importance of health disclosure for effective support.
“Everyone must go through the medical screening. Some students come with sickle cell disease and do not tell us. Others come with diabetes and disclose it,” she said.
Mrs. Oduro assured students that the university has structures in place to support those living with chronic conditions.
“KNUST is a family. We have communities that support students with chronic illnesses to ensure they have a smooth academic journey,” she added.
She appealed to all students with disabilities to inform the university upon arrival:
“If you have a disability, please let us know on the day you arrive. Help us to help you.”
She also disclosed that the Medical Director of the University Health Services will hold a special session on Sunday to further outline health and support services available on campus.
The virtual orientation recorded over 8,000 participants and featured key presentations from various university departments including the Directorate of Student Affairs, UITS, the library, and campus security.
Addressing the students, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson encouraged them to stay focused and make the most of the opportunities available at KNUST.
“We remain committed to providing you with a safe, enabling, and stimulating academic environment. Please take advantage of the support systems we have put in place,” she said.
The orientation marked the official welcome for first-year students as they begin their academic journey at KNUST.
