The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has directed students not to pay any increased accommodation fees, assuring the student body that it is taking steps to protect their interests amid concerns over rising hostel charges.

In a notice issued on July 1, 2026, the SRC said it had received reports of arbitrary increases in accommodation fees by some private hostel operators, leading to widespread anxiety among students. The Council described the situation as a matter of urgent concern and reiterated its commitment to ensuring fair and lawful accommodation charges.

The SRC issued a firm directive that no student should pay any increase in private hostel rent under the current circumstances. It urged students to report any hostel management that attempts to increase rent without the appropriate assessment and approval from the Rent Control Department.

The Council also clarified that there has been no increase in fees for the University’s traditional halls of residence. It therefore advised students to disregard any unofficial fee structures or price lists circulating from the halls and cautioned against making payments based on such information.

According to the SRC, discussions with the relevant authorities are ongoing to address the issue and ensure a fair outcome for all students. The leadership assured the university community that it remains committed to safeguarding students’ financial interests and promoting transparency in accommodation-related matters.

The notice was jointly signed by SRC President Kwame Ntiamoah Ntim and General Secretary Jeminah Elorm Ahiabor.
