The President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), H.E. Shakir Waiz Is-Haq, has delivered the State of SRC Address for the 17th SRC Parliament, presenting an overview of the council’s achievements, ongoing initiatives, and plans for the 2025/2026 academic year. Addressing students at the IDL Conference Centre, the SRC President highlighted the council’s commitment to student welfare, campus development, and responsible leadership.
“I am proud to announce that the state of our SRC is magnificent,” H.E. Shakir Waiz Is-Haq declared, emphasizing the progress made since the beginning of the 17th Parliament. He commended the efforts of SRC executives and student leaders in implementing projects and ensuring that the council remains responsive to student needs.
A major theme of the address was peace and responsible conduct within the university community. The President urged students to act responsibly, saying, “I urge us all to be advocates of peace so we can enjoy all that an uninterrupted university community comes with.” He warned against dangerous or reckless activities, adding, “There is no form of entertainment that must cost us our lives.”
On the much-anticipated SRC Week celebrations, H.E. Shakir Waiz Is-Haq clarified that there has been no official cancellation, despite restrictions on social gatherings due to a recent altercation. “There is no official communication from University Management indicating the cancellation of Students' Week celebration, though social gatherings are currently banned,” he explained, adding that the SRC is working with management to restore calm and lift the ban. Students were urged to follow university protocols to ensure the celebrations can proceed as expected.
The President also addressed student digital support initiatives, including the delayed Telecel 10GB data project. He explained that the proposal was submitted after the university’s fee schedule was finalized, which prevented its inclusion in the current academic year. “The 10GB data is tied to the fees for the next academic year, and we are optimistic about its implementation in the next administration,” he reassured students, adding, “10GB delayed is not 10GB denied.”
H.E. Shakir Waiz Is-Haq further outlined key infrastructure and sustainability projects, including the Brunei to KSB walkway project, whose first phase is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The SRC has also committed to decarbonizing campus transport by acquiring electric shuttles to replace fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, demonstrating a focus on environmental responsibility.
In addition, the 65th SRC administration announced its flagship legacy project: the construction of a premium astroturf sports complex. This initiative is aimed at enhancing sports infrastructure on campus, providing students with a modern, accessible space for recreation, training, and competitive activities.
The address reinforced the SRC leadership’s focus on student welfare, academic support, and campus development, highlighting initiatives such as welfare programs, health campaigns, and sustainable facilities. H.E. Shakir Waiz Is-Haq concluded by calling on students to maintain peace, engage responsibly in campus life, and support the SRC’s ongoing efforts to improve the university experience for all students.
