Internship Overview

The Government of Japan (METI) Internship Program for Foreigners 2026 is a fully funded internship designed to provide highly skilled international students and graduates with practical work experience in Japanese companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises. The program aims to support global talent development, strengthen international business expansion of Japanese companies, and give participants real exposure to working life in Japan. The internship is available in both online and in-person formats and includes training such as cross-cultural understanding, crisis management, career development, and Japanese language training before and after the internship. Selected participants are matched with host companies based on their academic background and skills and are expected to participate in structured internship activities. Applicants are required to complete the official application through the Japan Internship Program online portal, submit all required documents, and pass the selection process before placement with a host company.

Eligibility & Requirements

    Applicants must be citizens of eligible OECD/DAC countries excluding China and must not be residing in Japan at the time of application. Applicants must be final-year university students or graduates of an undergraduate or graduate program and must demonstrate a strong intention to work with Japanese companies. Applicants must have proficiency in English or Japanese at a minimum level of JLPT N3 or CEFR B1 and must generally be between 18 and 39 years of age. Applicants must agree to fully participate in all internship activities and training programs and must be able to submit proof of enrollment or graduation, recommendation letters, and other required qualification documents after screening. Applicants must not have participated in the program between FY2016 and FY2025 and must have a strong interest in pursuing career opportunities in Japan after the internship.
