Renowned Urologist Prof. Yamoah Kyei Calls for Openness in Tackling Genito-urinary Disorders
Professor Mathew Kwame Yamoah Kyei, a genito-urinary surgeon and Head of Surgery at the University of Ghana Medical School, delivered his inaugural lecture titled “Naked but not Ashamed” to advocate for openness in addressing genito-urinary health issues. He urged Ghanaians to overcome cultural taboos and seek timely treatment, noting that early disclosure leads to better outcomes.

Prof. Kyei shared research findings on advancements in prostate treatment, pain management, and rising kidney stone cases, suggesting possible environmental causes. He debunked myths about prostate sizes in African men and emphasized that most cases now qualify for minimally invasive surgery.

He also addressed prostate cancer screening, public fears, and the need to discuss sensitive issues like penile fractures and masturbation-related injuries openly. With over 25 years of experience and more than 50 publications, Prof. Kyei has been instrumental in shaping urology practice and health policy in Ghana.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and Registrar Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah praised the lecture for tackling taboo subjects and reinforcing the university’s commitment to impactful, socially relevant research.
