Tragic Accident Claims One Life, Injures Four in Front of University of Cape Coast
On Thursday, June 19, 2025, at approximately 12:48 PM, a tragic accident unfolded in front of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) West Gate, also known as the second gate, along the busy Cape Coast–Takoradi–Accra Highway in Ghana’s Central Region. A heavily loaded tipper truck, driven by 29-year-old Bright Essel, lost control and collided with multiple vehicles, including a Honda CRV SUV (registration CR 329-20), a Nissan Sentra saloon car (registration CR 1756-12), and a tricycle, locally referred to as a “pragya.” The truck also struck 19-year-old pedestrian Wilfred Awusi Ninson, who was waiting to cross the road.
CCTV footage revealed the truck veering off its lane, crushing the vehicles and the pedestrian in a devastating sequence. Wilfred Awusi Ninson was rushed to the UCC hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is now at the hospital morgue, awaiting autopsy. Four others sustained injuries, including Charles Ayensu Peters (47), Prince Anamag Baidoo (27), and an unidentified occupant of the saloon car who was found unconscious. All injured victims are receiving treatment at the UCC hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
The driver, Bright Essel, is in police custody, assisting with investigations to determine the cause of the accident, which has heightened concerns about road safety at this busy intersection near UCC. Local reports and posts on X initially raised fears of multiple fatalities, but authorities have confirmed one death. The incident has left the UCC community and residents in shock, prompting calls for improved traffic measures to prevent future tragedies.
