Ghana Needs Investment in Soybean to Tackle Poverty and Drive National Development – Prof. Adjei-Nsiah
Prof. Samuel Adjei-Nsiah of the University of Ghana has urged the country to prioritize soybean production as a strategy to fight poverty and promote rural development, especially in the northern regions. Delivering his inaugural lecture, he emphasized soybean’s potential to enhance nutrition, soil fertility, job creation, and local industries such as poultry and aquaculture.

Despite growing demand, Ghana produces 343,000 metric tonnes of soybean—less than half of the national requirement—resulting in heavy imports. Prof. Adjei-Nsiah called for investment in seeds, mechanisation, value chains, and farmer training to bridge the gap, especially in northern Ghana.

His decade-long work has benefited over 130,000 farmers with improved seeds, digital advisory tools, and sustainable farming models, supported by partners like the Gates Foundation, NORAD, and IITA.

He concluded by advocating for a national soybean strategy, aligning research, policy, and agribusiness to make the crop central to sustainable agriculture in Ghana.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo praised his impactful research and commitment to community transformation, calling him a model of engaged scholarship.
