Healing Beyond Words: The UG Researcher on a Mission to Bridge Medicine and Sign Language for Inclusive Healthcare and Education
Dr. Naa Adzoa Adzeley Boi-Dsane, a Medical Doctor and researcher at the University of Ghana, has built a multifaceted career that blends medicine, research, and advocacy—especially for the deaf community. Though she initially aspired to study Mathematics, she was guided into medicine, where she found purpose and impact.
Early in her medical training, she pursued research in areas like gastrointestinal cancers, neonatal hypothermia, and vaccine side effects. Her groundbreaking studies have influenced public health and shaped responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. She also integrates machine learning in healthcare to predict and prevent diseases.
Her advocacy for the deaf began after encountering communication gaps in healthcare. She learned sign language and launched SignWithAdzeley, a YouTube channel offering health education in sign language. She also introduced an abacus STEAM training program at the Demonstration School for the Deaf and is lobbying for sign language inclusion in education and healthcare training.
A strong proponent of science communication, Dr. Boi-Dsane frequently appears on media platforms to translate complex research into accessible public knowledge. She envisions a future of inclusive education, research-driven policy, and accessible healthcare, embodying excellence, empathy, and impactful change.
