Suspected Thief Apprehended at UG Mensah Sarbah Hall yesterday for Stealing Phone and Money ,has allegedly escaped
The incident occurred around mid-afternoon on June 3, 2025, when residents of Mensah Sarbah Hall, one of the University of Ghana’s prominent residential halls, caught a suspected thief in the act. According to eyewitnesses, the individual was spotted attempting to flee a room in the hall with a stolen smartphone and an undisclosed amount of cash. The quick response from students in the vicinity led to the suspect’s apprehension before he could escape.
A post on X by @Voice_of_Legon, reported the incident, stating, “A suspected thief was caught this afternoon at Mensah Sarbah Hall after allegedly stealing a phone and some money from a resident. He has been handed over to the UG Security for further investigations.” Another post by @bloggerbillgh added that the suspect was also allegedly attempting to steal a laptop, though this detail remains unconfirmed by official sources.
Students who witnessed the event described a tense but coordinated effort to detain the suspect. “We heard a shout from one of the rooms, and when we rushed over, we saw this guy trying to run with a phone in his hand,” said Kofi Mensah, a third-year student residing in Mensah Sarbah Hall. “We managed to block him and called security immediately.”
The University of Ghana’s security team responded swiftly, taking the suspect into custody for questioning. A university spokesperson confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the incident and whether the suspect is a student or an external individual. “The safety of our students is our top priority,” the spokesperson said. “We are working closely with hall authorities and the Ghana Police Service to ensure a thorough investigation.”
Students have expressed mixed feelings about the recent event. Some praised the vigilance of their peers, with one student, Ama Serwaa, noting, “It’s reassuring to know we can look out for each other. This could have gone unnoticed if not for the quick thinking of the residents.” Others, however, called for stronger security measures, such as increased patrols and better access control to residence halls. “This isn’t the first time we’ve had issues with theft,” said another student, who wished to remain anonymous. “The university needs to invest in CCTV and stricter entry protocols.”
As of June 4, 2025, unconfirmed reports surfaced on X claiming that the suspect may have escaped custody. A post by @Voice_of_Legon stated, “The suspected thief arrested at Mensah Sarbah Hall yesterday for allegedly stealing money and handed over to the police has reportedly escaped.” However, neither the University of Ghana nor the Ghana Police Service has officially corroborated this claim, and it remains inconclusive. If true, this development could raise further questions about the handling of suspects and campus security protocols.
