CEGRAD promotes menstrual hygiene
To mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy, and Documentation (CEGRAD) at the University of Cape Coast organized a menstrual hygiene awareness campaign at the Cape Coast School for the Deaf and Blind under the theme “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.”

The campaign aimed to promote menstrual hygiene education and reduce stigma. Students from senior high schools, health workers, and members of the diplomatic corps participated. Sanitary towels were donated to the students by CEGRAD.

Prof. Eunice Fay Amissah, Director of CEGRAD, emphasized the importance of teaching both girls and boys about menstruation to foster understanding and reduce prejudice. She encouraged girls to manage their periods with dignity and confidence.

Dr. Mrs. Juliette Dufie Otami, Central Regional Director of Education, commended the initiative, stating that menstruation should not hinder girls’ education. She also noted that the region had received over 85,000 sanitary pads from the National Sanitary Pad Distribution Programme, which targets over 2 million schoolgirls nationwide.

Mrs. Agnes Osei from the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) educated attendees on menstrual health, the use and disposal of sanitary pads, and the importance of hygiene and nutrition during menstruation.

CEGRAD concluded the event by donating more sanitary pads to participating schools, reinforcing the global message of breaking menstrual stigma and promoting period-friendly environments.
